Introduction

Dr. Nithiya Palaniappan joined KDAH in October 2017. Prior to joining KDAH, Dr. Nithiya worked as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (with special interest in Fetal Medicine) and Head of the labour ward services at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE), the maternity unit in Scotland, UK with over 7000 deliveries a year and also the largest referral unit for advanced obstetrics and fetal medicine.

In this role, besides carrying out a number of simple procedures on a daily basis, Dr. Nithiya has had wide experience in successfully managing some of the most complex obstetric and fetal issues in pregnancy including

Acute aortic dissection in pregnancy (rare case, only a few reported in the world) Major obstetric post partum haemorrhage following abruption in pregnancy requiring >20 units of blood transfusion Acute inversion of the uterus following a straight forward vaginal delivery Maternal cardiac arrest during caesarean section successfully resuscitatedPregnancy in patients with multiple prior abdominal surgeriesPregnancy in patients with diabetic issuesPlacenta accreta sections (conserving uterus as well as Caesarean hysterectomy)Post-partum haemorrhage (Bakri and B-Lynch procedures)Twin pregnancy with twin-twin transfusion syndrome and extreme pre-term deliverySevere early and late onset Intra Uterine Growth Restriction Skeletal dysplasias Cardiac anomalies, co-ordinated the multi-disciplinary Fetal-Echo clinicCongenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Fetal Renal tumours
At RIE, Dr. Nithiya conducted the Diabetes in Pregnancy clinic and led the risk management role at the hospital. She also lead the stillbirth group at RIE and was a national reporter to the nationwide stillbirth committee in the U.K. Dr. Nithiya has worked with some of the world renowned gynaecologists as a part of her training and she is adept in benign gynaecology.

Prior to RIE, Dr. Nithiya worked in seven different hospitals across UK in rotation as part of her CCT training where she had the opportunity to learn the best practices across hospitals and develop her simple philosophy of focusing on three Cs – Clinical excellence, Care and Communication, to deliver best outcomes for the patient.
